For an island of 22,000 people, Lefkada has an extraordinary cultural calendar. The Lefkada Festival of Speech and Arts (Giortes Logou kai Technis), held every summer since 1955, brings theatre, music and literature to the town. The International Folklore Festival, founded in 1962, fills the streets each August with dance groups from around the world.

The island’s villages keep their own traditions alive: the Karya embroidery, a unique needlework technique; the lentil festival of Englouvi; religious feasts and panigyria with live music throughout the summer.

Lefkada town hosts the Archaeological Museum, the Charamoglios Special Lefkadian Library — one of the most important collections on the Ionian Islands — and the historic Nikos Svoronos Library.
